The construction plan I'm using to build my kayak came from Preston Holmes' website: http://www.ptone.com/Kayak/surfboat/ Basically I shaped a plug out of foam, which I'm going to cover in glass/kevlar, and then when the layup is complete i'm going to dig the foam out through the cockpit. By using this technique, I can alternate the layers of glass/kevlar on the hull and the deck, and overlap them for extra strength. I also have a board along the keel (right now it's inset in the foam plug) for extra rigidity.
As far as UV protection goes, I was planning on painting the deck of the kayak, and leaving the underside clear. I wasn't aware they made UV inhibiting varnish, but I'll be sure to find some, thanks for the info.
I've never done anything with fiberglass or kevlar before, and i've never built any kind of boat before. I have no idea how many layers of glass or kevlar it will take to make the kayak as strong as it needs to be. Any information on typical layups of fiberglass or kevlar kayaks would be very much appreciated.
If I were to use kevlar alone, how many layers would it take? Is it necessary to use the same thickness on the deck as I do on the hull? Thanks very much for any information.
