I was thinking about this for a couple of days. Why not epoxy two 1"w X 3/4"t X ?"l strips of wood along the length of the storage compartment wall? One on each side with notches cut into them for bungies to pass through? Make them long enough to go deep enough into the ends of the yak so that gear can be lashed to them. You can even put ropes/pulleys at the far ends so that gear can be "towed" into the compartment and out again.

Kind of like 2 long notched rails. Only issue I can see is: Would the rails make the yak too unflexible if it hits something in the water?
