I've attached a link to the next boat I'm building (gasp! it's not a kayak...).

I don't want the weight, not cost of 1/4" fir marine fir plywood, nor the expense and transportation of getting 4mm Okume for the "lightweight" version, so I'm going to try it with two layers of the nominal 1/8" inch mahogany that I've been referring to as doorskins.

I think laminating plywood is a legitimate technique in boat building, as larger (wooden) craft are often built-up with thin layers of ply or veneers to get 1/2" or 3/4" thick curved hull sections, something that wouldn't be possible if starting out with 3/4" thick ply.

Whether I'll be able to avoid air bubbles will be interesting, but I'll have a hull that is about 5.4 mm, and possibly stronger than using the regular 5.5mm (1/4") luan sold at the Home Depots of the world (at a slight increase in expense, but much less expensive than Okume or marine fir).

As far as epoxy goes, a lot of us 1st time builders use too much, especially when building fillets, etc. Charlie probably is right, but I'm betting that most people use about 2 gals. or so on their 1st several kayaks. (I think I came in around 2 1/4 gal. for a 17' CLC chesapeake (High volume, touring yak 6oz glass in and out, double layer taped seams on the exterior).

I'll laminate the panels in the spring, and put the whole thing together when the New England weather is warm enough in June for the epoxy to set. Results of this experiment will be posted (good or bad!).
