: Sorry, Patsy...maybe I'm broadcasting MY lack of knowledge...In the
: NorthEast, there is a plywood distributor (Atlantic Plywood) that sells
: luan plywood that is 1/8" thick, in 4' by 8' sheets. I think two
: sheets laminated with epoxy might be better than the regular 1/4"
: (5.5mm) luan sold at the Big Box stores, because the plys are consistent
: thickness, with less of that lousy thick core that you find in the 5.5 mm
: luan. Also, by staggering the panels by 1" or so, you could make a
: step joint, rather than having to make a scarf joint to make kayak panels
: longer than 8'. Making scarfs with a low angle hand planer isn't that big
: a deal with good quality 4mm marine plywood, but it is still a pain.

: Given what Rhed said, I might be incorrectly referring to this 1/8"
: plywood as "door skins". It was $7.50 a sheet the last time i
: purchased it in 2001, so $15.00 for 6 ply, 1/4" plywood still seems a
: lot cheaper than $45 for the marine mahogany. Keep reading the board and
: check some books out of the library...you'll blow them away at the lumber
: yard with your new knowledge!

The door skins usually run in that range for Luan and on up to $11 and $12 for the Oak or Ash. They may even come in 4' x 8' sizes. The 3mm is about the same as the 1/8", so you were probably on the right track.
