Go local if you get a kit, and kits are a pretty good way to get started on that first boat....I didn't understand that concept "first boat" when Michael Vermouth of the Newfound Woodworks first mentioned it...but again, many of our fellows here on the KBB might aggree...once you build one, it's tough to "not" build another.

I know for a fact that there are many contributors on this bulletin board who are from Australia. They will be a great help in finding local sources for all materials, and they might even show off some of their boats if you've the time to go for a visit.
