Hi Phil
If you are thinking about a strip built kayak buy Nick Schade's book , even if you eventually decide on a different design to those in his book it will take you through the building process for any strip kayak so nicely that anyone can do it. Read it cover to cover then look at all the links you have been given, decide what sort of boat you like most and build it. Allow at least 200 hours build time and $1000 will cover you pretty well (unless you get someone else to cut your strips and bead and cove them which will add a few hundred). Have never built a stitch and glue so cant give you any advice there. In australia it can be hard to find western red cedar at a reasonable price but there are alternative woods, there was a thread on this (search something like calling Aussie builders) in the last month with some discussion. It is a most fulfilling experience building your own kayak.
cheers
david
