The RTV part isn't all that important, that's just what's on the label in the hardware stores. Get the clear stuff, it seems to work well. Don't buy a huge tube of the stuff, unless you plan to use it alot.

The tape idea is a good one. Separating the parts with silicone can be a little tough. I usually run a razorblade between parts. Once the parts are off, the silicone rubs off with your thumb, but I'd go with the duct tape in between. You can experiment on a piece of scrap wood painted the same way as the boat.
