hehehe -- as Mike was writing this post I was writing the one saying that you might end up with a barge. Check out the weight of that 17' Lowell kayak: 90#! just try and roof-rack that sucker! 3/4" cedar planking on the lower hull, 3/4" oak frames...

Reminds me of the scene in Ben Hur where the boat's rhythm-keeper is pounding a mallet on a wooden anvil and grunting "RAMMING SPEEEEEED!!!!" Just outfit that kayak with a below-water battering ram...
