: Randy: I'm puzzling out the installation of a bilge pump on my forward
: bulkhead, and have thought about adding an external cap to the system. Is
: your walnut cap a solid plug that will dislodge itself under pressure from
: the pump? Do you have it tethered to the inside of your outlet pipe?

I made a contoured birch plate that holds my compass and the walnut plug/outlet. You could put the plug directly into the deck easily. I have a short piece of black bungee that connects it to my deck bungee two inches away. The pressure from the pump just blows it open. I took a hard rubber plug and glued it to the walnut wood for a tighter fit into the PVC so it doesn't fall out when the kayak is inverted or blow out while on my boat rack going down the highway.

: What model Guzzler do you use -- the 500? Do you have a strainer at the
: inlet?
I use the 500 with the biggest pipe inlet/outlet. I don't have a strainer now.
If you get leaf/twig type debris in your boat, it can clog against your pump intake and boat won't empty. I have pumped some nasty stuff thru my other guzzler over the years with no clogging, small rocks and leaves went right thru. However a twig might jam it up inside, so a course screen might work.

I'll try a couple of strainers and see how the work.
