The ideal position is at the lowest point in the boat, which is usually around the seat somewhere. My deck pump intake is right in front of the seat and works great.

: Has anyone had any expearience with the Whale Babyfoot Pump?

I've looked at it and the capacity is too small for use as a single pump. However, it's small and light enough that it could be used in a dual pump, single intake/exhaust system. This would give you a a pump for each foot (spreads the load) and some redundancy in case one pump fails.
