In Response To: Why Hatches? (Rene Braun)

I have never owned a kayak with hatches or bulkheads. I know this will be greeted with a chorus of replies saying that it's not safe, I'm inviting trouble, what if the boat swamps etc. I see safety as an issue of avoiding problems in the first place. The convenience of no hatches is well worth what is a risk only if you swim. I have two large, conical gear bags, one for each end of the boat. I pack/unpack on shore and simply load through the cockpit. I always know exactly where things are. I can balance the kayak with confidence and I guarantee I will always be the first to have his tent set up and the first packed and ready to paddle. Oh yes, I like a clean uncluttered deck too.
