hi;
i have had no trouble with breakage. what i did was cut the scarf ACROSS THE WIDTH of the board so that my strips are scarfed THROUGH THE THICKNESS.
also.. scarfs are 8/1. my material is yellow cedar. (cypress?)
i've not tried to scarf in place, so i can't answer that question.
