I've used a couple of solutions to your router problem. The first is to put some fairly fine sandpaper between the router and base housing. On the Ryobi's, the motor slides in the base rather than thread into it like most routers. When hanging under the router table gravity does its thing and the motor slides down, out of the base. The sand paper give some "bite" to the assembly, giving a bit more grip.

The other option is to use a crutch under the router motor (one thats mounted in a table) Take a standard cheapo turnbuckle, mount one end into a piece of wood and use it to support the router. The turnbuckle allows adjustment as you change the depth of cut.
