These coatings -Varathanes and water based Flecto- are more sealers than anything and do not really get thick enough to provide a decent layer of protection in themselves - which is ok for most use. The local bigbox store has a cheap polyurethane at $7 a quart which will do fine on 8 oz nylon rather than the pricey water based stuff.

A likely one-part thicker coating is Plasti-Dip which is available in US gallons, haven't tried it yet on nylon myself.
