: Can anyone help me out with some terminology here. Web site-web page? I've
: done a web page on AOL. As I understand it this page is stored for me on
: AOL's server and is accessible to anyone that uses its URL. When does a
: web page become a web site? Is that a function of the URL? That is, if you

I've always considered a WEB Site to be the WEB presence, i.e. all info available at that URL. It is made up of WEB pages and single WEB documents. Of course, they could be the same thing if the Site had one page.

: call up GodGeorge.com and you get to my page is it now a site? Or is a
: site a bunch of linked pages? To have you have access to godgeorge.com do
: I have to build and operate my own server? With $100K Cisco servers going
: for $1500 at dom com creditors' auctions this is a possibility.

Typically, to have your own domain, i.e. GodGeorge.com, you would first register the name at one of the numerous possible registrants now available ($35/yr assuming it isn't already taken). After that, you need to host the domain some place. That is usually more expensive. The prices I've seen are $200-300/yr or more. Anyone know of cheaper solutions? This host is where you would actually keep the files (thus, the expense. These are the people who pay for the connection, do the backups and maintain the servers.). As others have mentioned, some ISPs allow users to have WEB sites as part of the annual fee, but you don't get your own domain name.

: Also, if I were to move my kayak album to an AOL web page anyone wanting to
: see the pics would have to leave the BBS to access the photos. Assuming

I don't think they would need to leave if you posted a picture. If you post a URL then I think Nicks board will open a new separate browser. The user can easily get back to the board by switching browser windows.
