Greg,
Tamarack is a larch (in N. America) its root stock is traditionally used for the ribs of Adirondack guideboats and as knees in other light craft. So it should be suitable for your planned use. It usually grows in boggy areas which makes it easier to extract the stumps and roots. Hope this helps.
