Hi Greg

Can't help you with Butternut, except that it's a hardwood and would be a bit heavy but useable.

Pine is soft, but with the glass on it would work fine. Tamarak is merely another type of pine but harder and a bit heavier. I'm sure it would work just fine. I'm sure all would work but with different degrees of weight and hardness.
