In Response To: paint for a foldable skin ? (Erez)

: I'm thinking about a foldable (for a while now),
: & I am looking for some skin options.

: a basic difference between a regular sof & a foldable is that with
: a sof the skin stays on the frame, so it is never folded.
: It can be painted with any color, & once the paint is dry it will
: not break because the skin never folds.

: with foldables it's a different story.

: I was thinking of using billboards pvc banner material for the skin,
: but I'm not sure how well it can be stretched over the curves of a hull,
: & then be sewn along some wrinkles that can't be stretched.

: another possibility is to use any cloth used on a regular sof, & paint it
: with somekind of paint that will stay flexible, so the skin can be folded
: & unfolded again & again.

: I'm not sure if such paint exist.

: I heard (read) somebody mentioned latex based paint.

: what exactly is it ?

: does it turn to something like latex gloves material when it dries ?

: if so, than is it possible to fold & unfold cloth covered with that paint
: ?

: what materials such paint sticks to ?

: canvas ?

: nylon ?

: polyester ?

: etc' ?

: does such paint has uv protection ?

: price/performance ?

: links ?

: any help appreciated,

: Erez

Hi Erez

Are you going with a total break-down type boat on this one? Will it be a 3 part kayak again or a kit type? That would be a tough one. The latex paint that some folks are using is mixed with linseed oil to keep it's flexibility, but that is only for slight bending and I doubt it would work on a fold. Have you checked at one of the fabric places to see if You could get a latex type material that could be sewn or glued up into shape and then just stretched over the boat after assembly? How about the Seattle Fabrics that was mentioned earlier this weekend. ?? Don't remember the exact web address.

Hasn't it gotten Tooooo hot for paddling down there by now? :)
