Go with the 17LT. I'm 5'10" 200lbs and paddle a 17. It hauls me + 100lbs of camping gear with no problem. At 150, I think you will want the reduced windage of the LT. As far as ease of build, no problems. Just take your time and don't be intimidated by anything, if in doubt, ask.
