Jim, Here's the short answer: Don't worry. There IS a consensus reality. Nick and many others have built strip kayaks that hold up just fine. If you wish to put Georges views in perspective go check out his reviews in Amazon.com on Nicks and Ted Moores' books.

As a practical matter I guess that most folks damage their kayaks in transport or in the parking lot. As far as correlating "A" glass lamination with "X" damage scenario there are too many variables for making a practical judgement, there-in lies my beef with Georges irresponsible trashing of anothers work. Tsunami sit-on kayaks are made from thick, tough hulls of kevlar that get broken when slammed into rocks (along with the paddler!), I've seen other folks make s&g kayaks out of unreinforced 3mm plywood that held up ok( just ok). 6oz glass on both sides of a strip hull is pretty tough. If you find after a few years that the boat needs another layer then that option is there but I bet you'll probably be spending your time outfitting it or paddling.
