I guess I ended up with a hybrid stroke. I never like the vertical plant, so even before I saw the Maligiaq article on paddling I used an angled blade because it entered the water more smoothly -- but focused on keeping a fast cadence/short stroke per Doug VanDoren. Maybe a longer one would work better for me...
