: (By the way, does anyone have any
: suggestions on what to do with about half a yard of wood shavings?)

while western red cedar is not as aromatic as some varieites of cedar, it still has an odor that humans find pleasant, but bugs -- particularly moths -- do not enjoy. Get some muslin (inexpensive cotton fabric) and sew some bags. Pack them with your cedar shavings and put them in your closets.

You can also buy essential oils and potpourri spices to mix with these, and make smaller bags for sachets for the drawers in your dresser. You can sell these at craft shows, too.

Wood shavings are a desireable filler for pet hamster, gerbil, mouse and rat cages. If you know someone who has a pet of this kind, donate the shavings. Many grammar schools have such pets, and usually they have small budgets for caring for them, so ask around. I'm sure they would love the donations.

: * will it be effective to glass this paddle for added strength? or would any
: forces that would break a bare paddle also crack the center of a glassed
: one?

Why spend the time and money on glassing this? Unless you have spare resin and glass cloth sitting around, and have nothing else to use it on, you could make another paddle in less time, and for less cost. This would give you two paddles, so you would have a nice spare paddle. Consider making the second with some slight alterations to length or width for varying paddling conditions.

Just my thoughts.
