In Response To: SF Bay area source for cedar (Scott Fitzgerrell)

Go to: Beronio Lumber, 2525 Marin Street, San Francisco, 415-824-4300.

They have kiln dried Western Red Cedar ... quarter sawn ... S4S ... 11/16" thick ... random widths and lengths. The price as I recall ranges from $2.08 to $2.49 per linear foot. They have no flat sawn wood in this grade.

They also have air dried Western Red Cedar ... random grain ... S3S ... 11/16" X 5-1/2" ... 8', 10' and 12' lengths ... $1.35 per linear foot. About 1 in 30 planks are flat sawn and the rest are quarter sawn or darn close to it.

Almost *all* of the cedar in both grades is light colored wood, although if you dig a little you'll find some of the darker colors. Forget anything over 12' ... generaly not available, although they may have longer lengths in the kiln dried stuff.

They also have 2" nominal Alaskan White Cedar. It looks buttery, featureless and it's heavy. It goes for $4.10 to $4.50 per linear foot. At that price I didn't look any closer.

I know all this because I scored 196 linear feet of the air dried flat sawn stuff today. So ... if you go there you won't be going on a wild goose chase unless there's some big rush to buy up their stock. Be prepared to spend a little time going through their stock to find what you need. Also have a couple of ideas of how you want your kayak to look depending on the color of wood ... light or dark ... available. Based on their stock as of today you'll find wood easier if you go for a light to medium color with dark trim wood. That's what I did.

I hope this helps you out.

: Does anyone know of a San Francisco Bay (preferably East Bay/Diablo Valley)
: source of cedar for stripping? Need Western red and northern
: white--ideally. Rob sez his Shooting Star takes several 1 by 8s at 17 feet
: or more.

: Thanks in advance!
