I think Steve is on the right track for your scanner problems. It sounds like it is trying to interpret you pictures as text. If you can switch the OCR capabilities off you should be all set.

As far as the roof rack goes, the first question is, "What vehicle is it going on?" Thule makes near-bulletproof racks systems for many vehicles. If you want to build your own rack the attachment system is a good place to start designing. If your vehicle has rain gutters you can buy metal brackets that attach to them and add your own cross bars and saddles. The beauty of systems like Thule is that they work well on cars without gutters. Unless you vehicle is an old beater, I'd hesitate to put holes in the roof to attach the racks. I don't think I'd trust anything like toggle bolts through the sheet metal; I'm not sure I'd trust any attachment that fastened only to the roof sheet metal unless I backed up some through-bolts with some pretty serious washers. The forces on a roof rack can be substantial when you're wailing down a two-lane to your favorite put-in and a semi is barreling down the hill from the other direction. I don't think I'd bolt to the roof unless I could bolt to a structural member.

On a tangent--the ubiqutous blue foam saddles and straps work well for infreqent transport. The system is suprisingly secure. You fasten the saddles to the boat, then fasten the boat to your car with 1) a strap around the mid-section of the boat and through the rear windows, 2) a pair of bow lines to the corners of the front bumpers, and 3) a pair of stern lines to the rear bumpers. I've seen someone fasten a boat down so tightly with this method that they put a substantial dent in the roof of their (rental) car.
