That seems about right, maybe a little on the light side. As a possible alternative I have been thinking about a commercial boat with a max. weight of 320 lbs. This would mean that I'd have about 30 lbs. available for gear, and, if you guess that published capacity specs are a little on the conservative side, and add 10% for overload, you come out with about 350 lbs. That would be OK for me, but maybe not for the next guy.

My real concern is that performance not suffer drastically from being a large boat, or deeply loaded. Load a boat down below its design lines, it's going to act like a dog. It's not easy to find a boat with good performance that will handle, say 350-400 lbs. of load -- a guy my size has to really look hard to find something that will work at all, much less be an optimum design.

Remember, there's more than just capacity involved with building a boat for a big person. Cockpit size is an issue; and many of us are not as flexible as we would like to be, either.
