Hi there.

I mount my compasses between the front bulkhead and the hatch cover. As I get older and more far-sighted (visually, I mean), anything within arm's reach is out of focus. I put the compasses about as close as I can and still read the numbers without my glasses.

If the compass recess fills with gunk, I can clean it out with a paddle splash. I don't mount them in the hatch covers (though that would generally be easier) because the covers tend to get banged around a bit when they are open and I'm fishing around inside.
