I've had the same thoughts, but how about trying to cut the deck tight or warp it slightly over the dome. Like the front half of the compass is useless so why have a big cutout for that part of it - . Then get much less of a deck intrusion. A cutout in plan form as much like a half an ellipse as possible. Mount compass from below, then don't see the plate either.
