Here's one way to deal with the tangle. At the bottom of the pic you can see the tails of the 15' straps wound up and secured with rubber bands cut off an old bicycle inner tube.

BTW, the big baggie (actually a 50 gal. drum liner) over the stem is to prevent the Seattle snow (!) from softening the glue and making that end go SPROING. Sure wish I had an indoor shop this time of year.
