The size of the tube is entirely up to you, but did you remember to leave room for a cable lock? The reason I like the size I used is because with the rope in the pipe I can still put a cable lock through it. I can also run the tie down straps through it when I put it on the truck.

Just coat it with epoxy to seal it.

I don't worry about it because the pipe goes through the epoxy end pour so the kayak is basically a solid chunk where the pipe goes through it. You are going to fill the end with epoxy aren't you?
