I can't speak for the bow, but on my first boat, I picked up a stainless U-bolt from West Marine and epoxied it (with a bit of interior reinforcement) to the rear deck aft of the rear hatch. (Trimmed and rounded off the interior threads soas not to snag things inserted into the rear hatch.) Worked like a charm and IMHO, looked just fine.

On the front, I wanted some a bit more inconspicuous (sp?)...used a small bronze padeye with screws long enough to penetrate into the front end pour. On bright finished wood, the small bronze eye looked quite nice. (Not sure I'd want to be towed by it in storm conditions however...)
