I use a Jet 2 hp, 220v dust collector for the tools that really put out a lot of dust or chips, like my table saw, planer and jointer. For the latter two tools, you really need a "Big Bertha" like that to collect what comes out. I have it connected with a "Long Ranger" brand remote power switch. It has a little remote clicker that I keep in my shop apron so I can turn it on and off quickly and don't have to do a lot of running around. That's a pretty good way to go. If you can afford it, get a two-stage collection instead of the one-baggers. There are some pretty cheap plans for do-it-yourself systems. The seperator systems using a trash can are great too.

I use my Sears shop vac to collect the dust from my ROS, biscuit cutter and other small hand power tools. The motor is certainly more noisy but that's why 27 db hearing protectors were invented. I wear hearing protection almost all the time even when using relatively quiet tools. I know lots of woodworkers, both professional and hobbiest, who have lost a couple of octaves of hearing from power tools. The slight discomfort and inconvenience is certainly made up for by my future ability to clearly hear my unborn grandchildren laughing! The best hearing protectors are just a few buck more than the bad ones.

Let me know if you have any questions and remember the old saying:

"Cleanliness is next to impossible." (That's posted on my garage wall.)

Cheers,

Brent
