Doen't sound like you made a mistake -- I think the strapping tape is pretty much the sandard method for taping the shear. I did it to my Outer Island and it worked fine. When you pull off the tape, some of the filaments don't want to come off with the tape and remain stuck to the hull, which is a nuisance. I used a razor blade to get these stragglers off, then cleaned the surface with acetone to remove the residue. I think you would find that strapping tape does a better job than the pallet straps you suggested. In deck/hull mis-match areas, the strapping tape will help pull the hull outward as well as push the deck inward; the pallet straps would only push the deck inward, and you'd probably have to put some sticks across the inside of the hull to force it out.

Remember that you will be sanding the exterior joint prior to taping it. Any left-over residue from either the tape or the Goo-Gone (or whatever you use) will get sanded off. It just may clog your sandpaper quicker than you would like...

: I made the mistake of using fiber reinforced packing tape to hold the
: hull-deck joint while I taped it. Next time I'll use the plastic pallet
: ties with the metal clips. I just finished scrubbing every square inch
: with Simple Green, which I hope got all the tape residue. I recall a
: thread about Goo-Gone, but couldnt find it. If there is a small spot or
: two that I missed, will the epoxy break it down on the final coats? Or
: will it go over it? Or perhaps not go off due to the contaminate?
