From what I can tell, this stuff shouldn't need refinishing for a few years. I would imagine that you could varnish over the top if you want to. There's a rule of thumb I read here that you shouldn't put a harder varnish over a softer one, but there shouldn't be any varnishes that are harder. If there were, I'd be using them instead.
