Tim,

A forstner bit cuts a nice clean hole, but it's hard to start it if you're drilling at an angle. For my Wee Lassie II, I drilled an alignment block first and then clamped it to the bow. I drilled the hole at the same angle as it needed to be on the hull (which was kinda eyeballed). The block then kept the forstner bit from skating over the surface of the bow. I'm not sure how much of this was overkill, but it worked.
