Thanks for the advice on drilling. What kind of bit did you use? Is 3/4" too big for a bit (should it be a hole saw)?

Well, I'm trying to go for more security than a cable. The thieves who stole our bikes used a cutter and cut through the cables with no problems. I think that we'll use cables through the cheek plates when locking them to the roof rack. But in the carport I'd be comfortable with a stronger lock. I intend to use two heavy eye-bolts screwed to the rafter to hold the other side of the U-Lock. In order to remove the boat, a thief would need to either cut both eye-bolts (or somehow pull them our of the rafter) or cut off the U-Lock.
