: I remember hearing somewhere (not sure where) of someone having a problem
: with using Titebond II (or any of those yellow carpenter's glues)on the
: deck. The glue isn't heat resistant and the thought was the deck heated up
: while on the top of his truck allowing the stips to shift a little. This,
: supposedly, stressed the fiberglass somewhat and caused some white
: streaks. Is this possible? I would think that after glassing inside and
: out on the deck that the wood would not shift at all.

: What glues do you out there use? I don't want to use thickened epoxy. Yellow
: Carpenter's glue sounds like it should work, but I don't want any problems
: with the deck.

: Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi Chuck

I would have to agree with Jerry. I have used both over the years in cabinet and Deck furniture and have never heard of anything like that happening. However, I can see how it might. The Titebond and Titebond II both work through capilary(spelling??) action, which means they absorb into the cells of the wood on each side, dry and bond in that fashion. If by chance the pieces aren't a good fit, and I don't remember what the acceptable gap is, they will not bond completely. Then, I could see where they might seperate with some use, or the heat level you would get from sitting in the sun for a length of time. I have no experience with fibreglass, so, don't know if that would help or hinder that process. With this type of glue, you do need a fairly good joint, but, not perfect. The closer, the better. If you've got wood touching wood, and the glue in the middle, you will have a bond and should not get any seperation. When you use titebond or II, it has been my experience that it only needs to be clamped for about 10 minutes to set, and about 1 hour to cure enough to unclamp. The joint should hold at that point with moderate pressure applied. I have personally seen two 2 x 4's glued end to end for 1 hour and then put on two saw horses and a man stand on the joint without breaking it. The stuff works!!

For what it's worth.
