Ed -- I'm building a S&G Merganser by Shearwater Boats (Eric Schade), and in Eric's instructions he says to mark a line 1" off the deck and use that as the top of the lip. I used 3/8 x 1/8 strips of mahagony and ash, and the only problem area I had was at the back of the cockpit and a little peck in the deck (left only about 1/4" under the lip). Unless Nick tells you other wise, top of the lip at 1" should be just fine. -- Greg
