low angle block planes

Thank you Fred Williams.

A couple of weeks ago there were a few post with reference to low angle block planes. Take care which one you buy.

Record plane part numbers are confusing and the blade angle is not marked on the packaging. The Record "60 1/2" has the 12 1/2 degree bed angle [this is the "low angle" plane I wanted] the Record "9 1/2" is a standard plane with a 20 degree bed angle.

By Fred's post I determined that I had inadverntly purchased the wrong plane. Fortunately I had all the paperwork and packaging and could return the plane to Lee Valley.

The good news is that the Record low angle plane was out of stock.

The bad [?] news is that the Veritas plane [from Lee Valley tools] was in stock - I made the mistake of checking it out - that IS a nice plane, expensive but nice.

Cuts real well, .003 thick shavings - right out of the box! The fine adjust on the blade is great. I am pleased with the one that I got.

If you are in the market for a plane you might want to check this one out.

You have got to watch those dangerous stores ;-)

Thanks again for the tip Fred.

Hank
