Hi! I am a beginner too, although I am now about 25% done with a Pygmy Boats Arctic Tern. I think that the advice you've gotten is pretty good. The Pygmy Boat kits are supposed to take about 70 hours, and because I'm kind of fussy, I'm guessing mine will take about 100 hours. You don't need any power tools except a small drill motor. A power sander (palm type) is handy however and they don't cost much (about $20). If you decide to go with a Pygmy Boat, here's some advice. First, read and re-read the instructions carefully (what I call the measure twice and cut once philosophy). Take your time (you'll be paddling around in your Kayak a long time, and will be reminded of mistakes or the consequences of taking shortcuts every time you take it out). Three, have fun. The kits are designed so that even a person with average skills can put it together (well, at least so far).
