Lee, "Alkyd enamals and related one part paints and varnishes are easy to work with but may not properly dry on epoxy resins." "The free unreacted amine in the epoxy resin coating interferes with the action of the metallic driers in some of these paints. If this happens the paint may surface dry but remain soft and tacky next to the epoxy resin surface."

The quote is from System Three and there are similar warnings on West System. I know from personal experience that Pettit Easypoxy paint will not cure over these resins. This is one of the so called Polyurethane paints. It just never gets dry. I have been told that Interlux 96 varnish does the same thing. Personally I would avoid any varnish that claimed to be a polyurethane or do a small test area to see if it will dry properly.

I also know from personal experience that the Flagship varnish works and looks great. System Three makes a waterbased two part epoxy primer that can be used to solve the problem if you are going to paint the boat. It is white and easy to use. Once the primer has cured you can use any marine paint over it.

Hope this helps. I work for a company that sells all this stuff so I've had feedback on what works and what doesn't. It has kept me from messing up my own projects, windsurfers, waveskis, surfboards, and now a seakayak.
