The unglassed deck is standard on the Patuxents. I understand their other boats call for glassing the exterior of the deck only.

No. Simply epoxying the wood just provides waterproofing and some stiffness, but not strength. To get the strength, you need fiberglass cloth. It's amazing how much strength even a light cloth - as littles as 2 or 4 oz, adds to the boat. For strength, you want to glass the deck both inside and out. On my Patuxent, I added glass to the outside of the deck, and just coated the inside with epoxy. It already has cracked - and it hasn't been out of the garage yet! I accidentally dropped it about 3" onto a sawhorse (it slid off a v-shaped foam block while sanding) - and that was all it took. By contrast, the hull is glassed in and out with 4 oz cloth - it's been accedentally dropped 30" off of the saw horse and suffered only some scuff marks. Then again, I used far too much epoxy when I wetted out the glass on the inside of the hull.

Fortunately, the cracked portion of the deck was accessible through the rear hatch, so it was easily repaired. And since the boat was not yet varnished, it blended in nicely, and is not noticeable.
