Sounds like someone I know (me) who wants to build a cedar strip canoe so he can build scuppered gunnels.

I did too, but you can always leave that shaft leaning in the corner (I have 2 like that) and put your effort into the one you really want to have! Then, when something else comes up (you want to experiment with a new blade design) you can use the old shaft without worrying about it not turning out "just right"
