Jay's description is close to what I have done also.

Except I used full length strips, and it takes me a little longer then Jay. But most strips don't take a very large bevel or time to make, only the ones at the chine are troublesome, may take me 15-20 minutes depending on how much checking I do.

With the no-staple method I ended up waiting for glue to dry anyway.
