Well, I wasn't going to bring it up, but now the cat's out. There is a whole world of planes out there and the block is convenient, but limited. The longer planes make edges straighter and curves fairer. Their mass is helpful for a number of reasons and the irons usually have a cap to reinforce the blade. The steeper blade angle, along with a small throat limits tear-out even "uphill" or in wild grain. I think the term "stuttering" is very descriptive and everyone who has felt it knows what is being talked about. Woodworkers use another linguistic term; they call it chattering.
