Larry, You didn't mention exactly why you weren't happy with the MDF, but, Just a wild guess would be that it was too thin, at 1/2" and possibly a bit too soft. Have you tried 5/8" underlayment. It's another type of particleboard and It's a harder compression than MDF. I don't remember for sure, but when I used the MDF in cabinet makeing, it was used in drawer sides and ends because of it's light weight, while the 5/8" underlayment was used extensively in cabinets for it's hardness and verticle strength. As in cabinet sides and bottoms wherever it didn't show. It is heavier than MDF but since You, hopefully, will remember to pull it out before decking, that will not be a concern. To the best of my recollection, the underlayment was a bit cheaper or near the same price. Also, as a general rule, it is very flat and if you get it off of a crooked pile, let it set on a flat surface for a little while and it will straighten out. Give it a shot. You may find it in the local lumber or hardware stores in half or quarter sheets and can try it in smaller quantities. ??? Around these parts it's about $6.99 to $7.99 a sheet, and about the same for a cut sheet.
