Dean, Here is a photo showing basswood on the deck of my Loon ST. This is only glassed and the photo has some glare, but it might give you some idea. The basswood is the center light 2wo strips and the 4 light strips between the two darker (dark red cedar) strips. The rest of the wood is light-medium red cedar.

Basswood works like butter. You can bend the strips into really complex curves very easily with no worry about breaking. It is extremely resiliant, cuts easily, and, with some selection, you can get bery light weight wood. There isn't a lot of grain, but it definitely looks like wood. Hopes this helps.
