I cant answer your questions because I have not tried it yet. I think Peterborough canoes used basswood as well as white cedar. The reason it interests me is its light weight and the price. The stuff I saw was at a farm and the old guy has a lot of it in 2x and 1x thicknesses. I will get some and mill up some strips and build another Wee lassie or something and let you know.

I dont have thickness planer or jointer and wonder if I can get good results using feather boards and ripping 2" thick lumber into 3/4" strips and then 1/4x3/4" strips. At the price of the lumber, I'am not worried about waste. The lumber seems very stable with no twist and has been dried and stored out of the weather.
