My opinion is that is is easier to get a strong joint by butt joining panels, but a stronger joint can be made by proper scarfing. Butt joints should be sufficient for all joints except where very tight curves need to be made, I would think that a butt joint would lose some flexibility. I do butt joints for plywood and scarfs for boards.
