That's how I built my G17. The strips were cut off the edges of the hull and deck trimmings. Care must be taken because the strings on the edge can drive you nuts, but if you cut straight and pull out a few strands on each edge, and are careful not to trap any ends underneath, it works much better than tape. That selvage edge on the tape just causes grief when feathering. The cut strips magically blend together, and my feathered edges are invisible. Nick's method of 1" strip under 2" strip really works well.
