With all due respect, you're a bit off with your building knowledge.

Cedar is a terrible building wood.

With all due respect, you're a bit off with your building knowledge.

Cedar is the most excellent boat building wood.

Northern white cedar is the reason canoes exist. Indigenous North Americans discovered it bends easily, it splits into gunnels and planks for ribs, is very lightweight and it's rot resistance was most highly prized. For small boats it is unequaled to this day and used extensively by builders of wooden boats.

Yes, it is soft and fiberglass/epoxy sheathing makes it tough, but before fiberglass people understood the limitations and did not abuse their boats. If you had boats you knew how to care for them.

Henry Rushton built lightweight canoes of 3/16" thick cedar hull reinforced with closely spaced oak ribs like his Wee Lassie circa 1895, copied by me and many other builders in homage to a great design.

If your only knowledge is of cheap, heavy, Tupperware boats, abuse is expected.
